The Semis

…and just like that, this World Cup gets exciting again. This is why I love football.

What a great set of matches. With the exception of Germany, the competition was between teams that had either have never made it to the final or simply have never won a World Cup.

Holland v. Uruguay

The game yesterday between Holland and Uruguay was superb. Had Uruguay not fallen asleep for those 10-15 minutes, maybe the results would have been differ. Or perhaps a non-injured Forlan (even though he scored a goal) could have made a difference. Maybe even if Suarez could have managed to not go into the match unable to play due to his red card.

At any rate, I was rooting for Holland. Why? Because I want history to change. The Dutch are arguably the best team to have never won a World Cup. Plus, no European country has ever won a World Cup held outside of Europe. That, at least, is about to change.

Spain v. Germany

Now, this was a game to watch.

Hard fought, eerily reminiscint of their earlier battle in Vienna, and a lovely goal by a defender. Of all the defenders, Carlos Puyol would score the winning goal. Germany was one of the few teams that I really enjoyed watching this World Cup. Their two shocker games against England (4 – 1) and Argentina (4 – 0) will never be forgotten. That being said, they went out and played like they did in Vienna. Even though those two games games were still competitive and close, Spain was the winner in both.

In less than a week now, a country that is going to be crowned winner of the World Cup for the first time. Can’t wait.
